How to Play Gunkan Suship
Turn-one setup, Xyz climbs, and winning patterns for new pilots.
Gunkan Suship looks silly on paper and plays like a precision instrument once you understand its rhythm. The deck is an Xyz strategy disguised as a Normal Monster package: you summon Gunkan Suship Shari, set Gunkan Sushipyard, attach Nigiri monsters from the deck as material, and climb into Carrier or Dreadnought ships that both interact and attack. This guide teaches that loop from zero knowledge through your first consistent wins.
Deck goal in one paragraph
Your ideal turn one ends with Gunkan Sushipyard active, a Shirauo-class Carrier or Uni-class Super-Dreadnought on board with two or more materials, and at least one set/trap or hand trap backing the board. You win by combining battle pressure — Ikura-class Dreadnought swings are enormous — with timely negates from Carrier or Super-Dreadnought detach effects. You lose when Shari is interrupted before yard resolves, when you over-commit into Nibiru, or when you attack into a board you needed to interrupt first.
Core card roles
Before sequencing, memorize what each piece does. Full card text lives on the cards hub; here is the pilot shorthand.
- Gunkan Suship Shari — Special Summons itself if you control no monsters, then sets a Gunkan Suship Spell/Trap from deck once per turn while you control a Gunkan Suship monster.
- Gunkan Suship Shari Red — Same opener plus the ability to attach itself from hand when Xyz Summoning a Gunkan Suship monster.
- Gunkan Sushipyard — Field Spell; Gunkan Suship monsters can attach from deck as Xyz Material. Once per turn, attach one Gunkan Suship from GY as material.
- Ikura — When attached, excavate five and add a Gunkan Suship card; fuels follow-up.
- Shirauo — When attached, draw one card; smooths hands.
- Uni — Extra Normal Summon of a Gunkan Suship; when attached, Special Summons a Gunkan Suship from hand — your Rank 5 enabler.
Standard turn-one line
- Normal or Special Summon Shari (Special if field is empty).
- Use Shari to set Gunkan Sushipyard from deck.
- Activate yard; Xyz Summon Shirauo-class Carrier using Shari plus a deck-attached Shirauo or Ikura.
- Evaluate hand: if you hold Uni and another Nigiri, plan a Rank 5 climb next turn or same turn if Red Shari extends.
- Set Catch-of-the-Day or Daily Special if Shari finds them, or pass with Carrier detach negate ready.
The combo library lists damage-optimized and interaction-first variants, including lines that skip Carrier for immediate Dreadnought pressure.
Climbing ranks and material math
Carrier is Rank 4. Dreadnoughts and Super-Dreadnoughts require Level 5 materials — usually Uni plus Shari, or Red Shari attached from hand during the summon. Gunkan Sushipyard’s once-per-turn GY attach adds material after battle, which matters when an opponent’s trap removes one piece. Never detach your last material frivolously; Suship ships need Xyz Material for negates and battle effects.
Battle phase discipline
Suship players lose games by attacking into unknown back row when Carrier could have negated a key spell. Default pattern: use Carrier negate during main phase if a spell/trap would break your yard, save battle for confirmed lethal or safe damage. Ikura-class Dreadnought protects itself from battle destruction — use it to crash smaller monsters and calculate OTK thresholds early.
Common mistakes
- Setting yard with Shari then forgetting you need a Gunkan Suship monster on field for later effects.
- Over-extending three monsters before Rank 4 summon, inviting Nibiru.
- Crafting extra traps before third Shari — see card tiers.
- Ignoring non-engine staples that protect Shari — Ash Blossom answers are part of build design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers duelist ask most often.
What if I do not open Shari?
Use Painful Decision, Catch-of-the-Day, or Daily Special to search. Hands without any starter are weak — that is why lists max consistency pieces first.
Carrier or Dreadnought first?
Carrier first when you expect spells/traps to break your board. Dreadnought first when you can OTK or need immediate battle pressure.
How many cards should I normal summon?
Usually one Shari line plus optional Uni Normal Summon. Extra bodies without Xyz purpose invite punishment.
Is Gunkan Suship hard to learn?
Easier than many meta decks. Lines are short; difficulty is knowing when to hold negates and how to attach from deck under timing rules.
