Gunkan Suship Main Deck Monsters

Main Deck monsters are the heart of every Gunkan Suship strategy in Master Duel. The archetype splits cleanly into ships—bodies you summon and overlay—and toppings—smaller Gunkan monsters that equip to those ships and grant combat stats plus triggered abilities. Mastering when to Normal Summon Gunkan Suship Shari, when to bridge through Shari Red, and which topping answers the current board separates casual sushi piles from pilots who steal wins from meta decks. This page covers every main-deck Gunkan name you will realistically play, how they interact with Sushipyard and Daily Special, and how they feed the Extra Deck warships.

Gunkan Suship Shari — the universal starter

Gunkan Suship Shari is a Level 4 EARTH Machine with 100 ATK and 1800 DEF. Its first line of text lets you Normal Summon it without tributing, which matters on turn one when you need a body immediately. Once per turn, if you control a Gunkan monster, Shari can Special Summon another copy of itself from your deck. That single effect defines the deck’s consistency: one Shari on field often becomes two, setting up Rank 4 Xyz plays or giving you fodder to attach toppings before overlaying.

In practice, opening Shari plus Catch-of-the-Day is the dream. Summon Shari, trigger Catch to search a topping or second engine piece, then use Shari’s effect for the follow-up summon. Many core combo lines end with a equipped double-Shari board converting into Ikura-class Dreadnought or Shirauo-class Light Carrier. Because Shari has negligible ATK, you rely on toppings and Xyz monsters for damage—never expect Shari alone to clock opponents.

Gunkan Suship Shari Red — deck access for toppings

Gunkan Suship Shari Red is a Level 3 EARTH Machine, making it slightly easier to summon on weak hands but still fully compatible with the Gunkan tag. When Shari Red is Normal or Special Summoned, you can target one Gunkan Suship monster you control and equip one Gunkan monster from your hand or deck to it. That effect is the deck’s built-in search disguised as an equip: you can grab Shirauo for interaction, Uni for removal, or even another Shari if your line demands bodies.

Shari Red shines when Sushipyard is not yet online or when you opened multiple toppings and need to consolidate them onto one ship before an Xyz Summon. Competitive lists discussed in the engine package guide often run two copies of Shari Red as a bridge card—not every hand has triple Shari, but many hands have one Red plus a topping. Red also enables going-second lines where you must attach Uni immediately for board breaking before overlaying into a Dreadnought with multiple attacks.

Gunkan Suship Uni — Level 5 removal topping

Gunkan Suship Uni is a Level 5 EARTH Machine topping. While equipped to a Gunkan ship, it raises ATK and DEF by meaningful amounts and grants a once-per-turn destruction effect against an opponent’s card. Uni is your primary answer to problematic back row or monsters when going second, and it remains attached when you overlay into Uni-class Dreadnought, a Rank 5 Xyz that can further extend your plays.

Uni defines the deck’s higher-Rank route. Two Level 4 bodies with Uni equipped lead to Rank 5 plays that meta decks do not always respect on turn one. When building your competitive list, include at least one Uni, with many pilots preferring two for redundancy. Pair Uni with Painful Decision (see spells and traps) to dump a redundant Shari and search another engine card, then equip Uni from hand the same turn via Daily Special or Shari Red.

Gunkan Suship Ikura — aggressive Rank 4 topping

Gunkan Suship Ikura is a Level 4 topping oriented toward offensive Xyz climbs. Its equip effect boosts the host ship’s ATK and enables battle-oriented lines into Ikura-class Dreadnought, a Rank 4 Xyz with multiple attacks under the right conditions. Ikura is the topping of choice when your plan is to clear an opponent’s board and swing for lethal rather than set up passive negates.

On budget builds, Ikura and its Dreadnought are high-priority crafts after triple Shari and Sushipyard because they provide the simplest win condition: overlay, attack repeatedly, and force opponents to respect rogue OTK math. Ikura also synergizes with double-Shari openings that skip Rank 5 entirely, keeping your Extra Deck flexible for matches where going second is guaranteed.

Gunkan Suship Shirauo — interactive equip negate

Gunkan Suship Shirauo is the defensive topping. While equipped, it offers an omni-negate style interaction against monster effects, which survives the transition onto Shirauo-class Light Carrier when built correctly. Going first, Shirauo is often the topping you search with Catch or Shari Red because a live negate on an Xyz body pressures combo decks to waste extenders.

Shirauo defines the going-first combo routes that aim for Carrier plus set Catch rather than glass-cannon OTK lines. Its Level 4 typing keeps overlay math simple with standard Shari boards. Remember that equip order matters: attach Shirauo before overlaying so the Carrier inherits the effect immediately upon summoning.

Ratios and opening priorities

Most optimized lists run triple Shari, two Shari Red, and one to two copies of each topping depending on whether the pilot favors interaction or lethality. The engine package page lists exact ratios for 40-card lists. When side decking, trim redundant toppings before cutting Shari—without Shari, the entire card list hub collapses.

When studying lines, cross-reference the combos hub for sequences that start from each topping in hand. A hand with only Shirauo and Shari plays differently from Uni plus double Shari, and the main deck section of your brain should know which line to choose before you click Normal Summon in ranked.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers duelist ask most often.

How many copies of Gunkan Suship Shari should I run?

Run the maximum three copies in every serious list. Shari is both starter and extender via its deck special summon, and it is the primary overlay material for Rank 4 plays. Cutting Shari below three sharply lowers consistency.

When should I summon Shari Red instead of a second Shari?

Summon Shari Red when you need a topping from deck immediately—typically Shirauo going first or Uni going second—or when your hand lacks another Level 4 body but already has Sushipyard active. Red's equip effect saves turns compared to waiting for another Normal Summon.

Which topping is best for going first?

**Gunkan Suship Shirauo** is the default going-first topping because it provides monster effect negation once equipped and carries onto Shirauo-class Light Carrier. Pair it with set Catch-of-the-Day for follow-up searches on the next turn.

Can I overlay if toppings make levels mismatched?

You must still satisfy Xyz rank requirements using the levels of monsters on field; toppings equipped as spells do not change level but the host ship's level determines overlay options. Plan equips so your final bodies are Level 4 for Rank 4 plays or carry Uni for Rank 5 routes.

Does Painful Decision replace any main deck monster?

Painful Decision is not a Gunkan card but a common spell that sends one Shari to search another Shari, fixing brick hands. It is covered alongside other support on the [spells and traps page](/cards/spells-traps/) and appears in most [competitive builds](/builds/competitive/).
